Special Gifts

Major Gifts

The Village relies upon special gifts to complete major projects, make capital purchases and expand the scope of its programs to serve children and families. The Development Office has a list of giving priorities available for individuals, organizations, and businesses wishing to make a special gift. Please contact us at (860) 297-0530 or development@thevillage.org.

A strong endowment is a critical component of an institution’s financial strength. Gifts to endowment provide program support for the families we serve today and for future generations. Gifts also generate steady and predictable income for daily operations. We are very grateful to the donors who established these lasting gifts.

Named endowed funds are established with a gift of $25,000 or more. Creating an endowed fund enables donors to establish a lasting legacy that will serve future generations.

The Village’s endowed funds:

  • The Ruth E. Clark Memorial Endowment Fund
  • Norbert Fried Memorial Scholarship Fund
  • Dian D. and Irving J. (Irv) Friedman Family Fund (buildup fund)
  • Friends of the Family Endowed Fund
  • The Cynthia B. Godfrey Memorial Fund
  • The Betty Goumas Memorial Fund
  • The Kissane Family Emergency Assistance Fund (buildup fund)

For more information about any of these programs, please contact our development office at 860-297-0544 or development@thevillage.org.

Gifts of Retirement Funds

IRA/401K/403b Plan designations are another simple way to make an estate gift to The Village, and this does not require a will or an attorney. You can designate The Village as a beneficiary on your tax-deferred plan. You may name as many beneficiaries on your plans as you would like; in addition to family members, The Village can be listed as a beneficiary. The Village, as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, will receive the full value of the gift; individuals as beneficiaries are subject to taxes. To designate The Village as a beneficiary, simply add our name and address to your plan’s beneficiary designation form.

Life Income Gifts

Life-income gifts preserve your financial security and establish a legacy for future generations. Through a life-income gift, your assets remain with you and your family until they are no longer needed and then they are passed on to The Village to fulfill your and your family’s philanthropic priorities. There are several ways to structure a life-income gift:

  • Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs) provide income for you or a family member for a fixed number of years then the balance is transferred to The Village to support our programs.
  • Charitable Lead Trusts (CLTs) provide regular distributions of income to The Village for a specified period of time. Once that time period has passed, the principal returns to you (Grantor Lead Trust) or passed on to a beneficiary, such as a family member (Non-Grantor Lead Trust). In addition to the principal, CLT Non-Grantor Lead Trust beneficiaries receive asset growth in excess of the regular charitable distributions free of additional gift or estate tax.
  • Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs) also provide financially for you or your loved ones; a gift annuity will provide income to you or a loved one for life beginning at age 65. The balance is then transferred to The Village to be used toward your charitable priorities.

For more information on these planned giving opportunities, please contact our development office at 860-297-0544 or development@thevillage.org.

The tax benefits of CRTs, CLTs and CGAs may include reductions in income tax, capital gains and estate tax liabilities. Please consult your accountant, attorney or investment manager for professional advice on how a planned gift may provide you with tax benefits.
