More than 2,000 pounds of food was donated to a pantry in Hartford on Friday.

Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, Hindu Yuva at UConn and Hoysala Kannada Koota held food drives last month and brought 2,430 pounds of food to M.D. Fox Elementary School on Maple Avenue.

“It’s really important that I’m making sure that everyone kind of gets a fair and equal chance to something as basic as right as having food security,” Aditi Malpure, president of Hindu Yuva at UConn, said.

The Village for Families and Children, a social service agency, runs the food pantry there that serves students and their families.

This is the second year these groups have made this massive donation. Last year, their donation helped 200 families facing food insecurity.

“This year, with so much food insecurity issues in our community, we know that we’re going to end up serving even more people this year from what they’re donating to us,” Yvette Young, The Village for Families and Children associate vice president of community programs, said.

The Village expects this donation will stock the pantry through most of the winter, depending on need.

They add that donors have been generous this year. Dozens have stepped up and bought gift cards for families in need.
