Foster Care FAQ

Thank you for your interest in learning more about The Village’s foster care program. The decision to open your home to a youth in need should be one that is well-informed. The following FAQ address common questions that arise. Please contact us with any additional questions you may have.

What are the age requirements for becoming a foster parent?

Anyone over the age of 21 who is of good physical and emotional health may apply to be a foster parent. Foster care can be demanding, especially when foster children have specialized needs. Willingness and ability are taken into consideration when The Village licenses foster families.

What are the housing requirements?

A bedroom must be available to accommodate a child or teenager—they cannot share a room with another individual. Your home must be able to pass a basic home inspection to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all household members. If you rent a home, your landlord must give written permission for you to foster.

What kind of training is offered?

The Village’s foster care training program is designed to prepare families for fostering. All foster parents attend a comprehensive training series offered at various times throughout the year. A full commitment to completing this training is required to be licensed. There are two options available:

  1. A five-week series of classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-8:00pm
  2. A 10-week series of classes on Mondays from 6:00-9:00pm

An additional three-part series of classes about the Functional Family Therapy – Foster Care (FFT-FC model) is available virtually.

How much do I need to disclose about my home and my family?

Assessments are conducted prior to licensing a home to provide foster care. A home inspection involves a Village staff coming to your home to check basic safety requirements and reviewing state regulations. A home study involves a Village staff spending time with you and your family members to learn more about your lifestyle. This process is often fun and includes questions that help ensure everyone’s safety is taken into consideration. Background checks on all household members aged 16 and older ensure a history free of a felony record and child abuse or neglect.

What kind of support is available to foster parents?

It truly “takes a village” to foster a child. The Village’s FFT-FC model empowers foster parents to be at the forefront of their foster youth’s treatment while working in partnership with The Village’s clinical team to help them achieve positive permanency outcomes (e.g. returning home to their birth family, transferring of guardianship or adoption).

Do the individuals in foster care have behavioral or social emotional issues?

All foster youth supported by The Village’s foster care program have life experiences that have impacted them in complex ways. While they require an approach to parenting that is collaborative, nurturing and structured, we help build upon their skills, strengths and talents to help them grow, develop skills and heal from wounds secondary to traumatic life experiences.

What are some behaviors can I expect?

It depends on the youth, as each will process trauma differently. It is important to remember that youth in foster care are wounded from their past experiences with neglect or abuse and are needing a safe place to heal. Some behaviors youth might use to cope could include difficulties forming relationships, substance use, running away, feelings of hopelessness or school struggles. Through consistent and loving caregivers, foster youth can replace these with new, healthy coping strategies.

How old are youth in The Village’s foster care program?

Most foster youth are 13 or older. However, there are some younger children with specialized needs that require the intensive supports offered by the FFT-FC program.

Whose responsibility is it to bring foster youth to their appointments and activities?

It is the foster parent’s responsibility to provide all transportation to and from scheduled medical appointments, school activities and community outings.

Is there a minimum income level that I need to meet?

Yes, you must have verified sufficient income to support the needs of your family. Foster families are offered a stipend from DCF that covers expenses such as clothing, food, utilities and additional daily living expenses.

How long does it take to get approval to have child placed in my home?

On average, it takes about three months from start to finish, which include various steps that allow for time to assess and prepare.

Do I need to have a backup plan for childcare?

It is recommended that you have a backup plan for childcare support. A natural support system can consist of friends, family or other licensed foster parents to assist when you may need temporary relief or help with a crisis.

Are references needed?

Yes, The Village obtain at least three references to speak to your ability to meet the safety and wellbeing needs of youth in foster care.
