FY20-21 Annual Report

Stories of
Resilience

Contents

Mission

To build a community of strong, healthy families who protect and nurture children.

Diversity Statement

The Village’s commitment to diversity extends beyond our words.

Diversity fuels our mission.

We believe that we are stronger and better when we actively include diverse people and thought to guide our practices and engagement with others. Through our diversity we learn fundamental truths, discover opportunities to create a more inclusive society, and enact real change.

Dear friends,

Resilience—it’s the one word that sums up the last year at The Village.

Many times, resilience is seen as a badge of honor, but we know that when trauma is involved, resilience can be about more than just bouncing back.

The pandemic exacerbated the challenges so many of our clients were already facing. Physical and mental health were put to the test. Financial strain and uncertainty often made things worse. And yet, every day, we witnessed our clients display incredible acts of courage and resilience.

As you flip through the pages of this annual report, we invite you to use your phone to actually hear some of their stories. You’ll see how The Village helped clients overcome significant challenges, such as being evicted, battling cancer, suffering from depression and coping with addiction. Each one of them practiced resilience, with The Village right by their side when they needed us most.

We believe resilience is something anyone can learn and develop, with the right support. That’s key to our mission—and we can’t do it without you. Our friends, donors, volunteers and partners made it possible in fiscal year 2021 for us to expand our services, strengthen programs and double-down on support for our frontline staff.

Longtime partners, like the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving and the United Way, never wavered. The State of Connecticut and the federal government kept their commitments and, in some cases, even expanded them. Local corporations, family foundations and individual donors increased their giving.

The Dalai Lama once said, “It is under the greatest adversity that there exists the greatest potential for doing good, for both oneself and for others.” That’s what resilience is all about. You get it. During these very challenging times your generosity fuels our mission and fosters resilience in the thousands of children and families we serve.

Attendance Initiative

This past year, The Village partnered with Hartford Public Schools and Travelers to address chronic absenteeism at Burr, McDonough, Martin Luther King,
Jr. (MLK) and Milner schools. The initiative, which reached eighth-grade students, used a multi-tiered approach to improve attendance and engagement in the classroom.

Meet Dontay.

A student at MLK, Dontay Hall was one of more than 24% of Hartford students considered chronically absent during the last school year. Unmotivated and wanting to stay home instead of attending class, this initiative encouraged him to embrace a new approach to school, resulting in huge improvements for his future.

Pictured: Dontay Hall, Hartford Public Schools student, and Dawn Chandler, Hartford Public Schools Behavior Tech and Attendance Initiative Liaison.

Adult Outpatient Services Expansion

Our new telehealth services, along with our partnerships across Greater Hartford, allowed us to significantly expand our geographic reach, ensuring adults across the state received help, even from the comfort of their own homes.

Resources like The Village help out a lot, especially for single moms like me.

Meet Liza.

Having already been diagnosed with cancer and grieving the loss of her mother, the COVID-19 pandemic added even more mental, physical and financial stress to Liza Huertas’ life. Struggling with postpartum depression and to pay her bills, Liza was referred to The Village and quickly got the support she needed.

Pictured: Liza Huertas, Village client.

Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic

Recognized as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), The Village launched an outreach initiative this year to veterans and seniors to provide specialized care for the unique challenges they face. CCBHCs ensure access to integrated, evidence-based addiction and mental health services, including 24/7 crisis response and Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT).

Meet Billy.

Struggling from the effects of the Vietnam War on his mental health, Billy connected to The Village for help. With newly regulated medicine and support through counseling and resources as part of The Village’s programs for veterans, Billy has been able to enjoy his life again.

Pictured: Billy Carr, Sr., Village client.

Financial Opportunity Center

The Village’s Financial Opportunity Center, which offers financial coaching, career coaching and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), provided crucial help to thousands of people this past year, despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. 5,248 tax returns were prepared by VITA volunteers, returning more than $12 million in refunds and credits. Virtual tax returns soared by 231%, resulting in a 400% increase in refunds and credits from virtual returns over the previous year.

If I can get up, a single mother who came from nothing, you can do it, too.

Meet Davine.

Davine desperately needed help with her credit and finances after leaving a traumatic relationship. Once she connected with The Village, she was able to build her finances, receive counseling and start a business.

Pictured: Davine Manson, Village client.

Krystal Spence, Emergency Assistance Fund

Emergency Assistance Fund

Thanks to a generous investment from
The Hartford this past year, The Village was able to provide significant support for residents of Hartford’s Asylum Hill neighborhood, home to its Spring Street Family Center. The Center provides basic needs services, parenting support, adult education, GED classes and is where The Village’s Early Childhood Learning Center preschool operates.

To have that support meant everything to me.

Meet Krystal.

After losing her job, Krystal needed assistance with her rent while she took care of her daughters and brother who is intellectually disabled. The Village was able to help, while also providing critical mental health support for her and her family. Today, Krystal is able to face life’s challenges a little easier knowing The Village is there to help.

Integrated Care

While traditional services treat medical and behavioral issues as separate and different, integrated care treats the whole person with a single, unified treatment plan. It connects primary medical care and behavioral health services to provide the best, most comprehensive support available.

During the past year, The Village’s Integrated Care program collaborated with 14 pediatrics practices throughout Connecticut to provide high-quality in-person and telehealth behavioral health services to more than 500 clients referred by those practices. The Village’s integrated services program partnered with pediatricians to serve clients’ needs seamlessly.

Even though there was a lot of stress on the kids, we were able to provide for them right away...we found a way to service a lot more kids.

Hartford Public Library Trauma-Informed Practice

Since 2018, The Village has partnered with the Hartford Public Library (HPL) to support its implementation of trauma-informed practice across the city-wide library system. Through leadership and staff training, employee surveys and focus groups, a refresh of policies and procedures and, most recently, the development of a trauma-informed handbook, HPL has embedded this practice across its organization to better serve the youth who come through its doors.

Meet Madyson and Nygel.

Nygel and many other HPL staff have worked diligently to infuse trauma-informed practice into their work with The Village’s partnership. Thanks to the safe space that has been created at HPL, youth and young adults like Madyson have mentors with whom they can confide.

Pictured: Nygel Wight, Program Production & Engagement Coordinator, Hartford Public Library; Lizandra Matias, Branch Manager, Dwight Branch, Hartford Public Library; Madyson Frame, photographer/local artist; Leticia Cotto, Customer Experience Officer, Hartford Public Library.

Vernon ROCKS

The Village, through the Vernon ROCKS Coalition, partnered with the Town of Manchester last year to help address teen substance use. A youth and adult advisory board was formed to engage community leaders and learn about teen substance use and risk factors. The collaboration, called Manchester Vernon Prevention Partnership (MVPP), is amplifying The Village’s substance use prevention efforts and creating stronger communities by increasing protective factors and reducing risks for youth. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MVPP launched its efforts by sharing prevention messaging through targeted social media campaigns and offering life skills workshops to high-school students.

Meet Saher.

Student and Vernon ROCKS’ Real Talk youth group leader Saher Ashraf is working hard to help her peers build resilience by offering tools, resources and guidance around substance use prevention and intervention.

Pictured: Saher Ashraf, Vernon ROCKS Coalition, Real Talk member.

Client Satisfaction

Client feedback and input is key to our ability to continue to provide quality, effective services. While we’re always looking for ways to improve, we are pleased with the results of this year’s surveys.

Below is a sampling of client feedback from our more than 40 program offerings at The Village.

Even during these hard times, [The Village] looks for ways to keep in contact with students and families.

Financial Report

The Village manages its resources with sound business practices that will ensure the sustainability of the agency for many years to come. Our funding is a mix of state and federal grants, program fees and contracts, corporate and foundation grants, individual donations and United Way funding. A healthy endowment also helps to ensure resources are available for innovations, new program investments and capital improvements.

We are committed to keeping administrative expenses low to maximize resources that directly benefit our clients. The Village Board and executive leadership take their fiscal responsibilities seriously, ensuring our programs are not only effective but also efficient.

Girl Within Luncheon

While our annual Girl Within Luncheon was forced to go virtual due to the pandemic, the event still drew hundreds of guests who helped meet our goal to support The Village’s life-changing programs for historically underserved young women and girls in the Greater Hartford area.

I identify with these girls. I’m an immigrant and lived in the inner city. When I look at them I see myself.

Meet Racquel.

Racquel Santana was nominated for the 2020 Girl Within Woman of the Year for her outstanding commitment to supporting women and girls. She is a dedicated mentor and community advocate. Racquel volunteers to provide young women and girls access to STEM programs and to address racial disparities in health and education within the Hartford region.

Foursomes for Fatherhood

The 10th Annual Foursomes for Fatherhood Golf Tournament took place at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell on June 14. More than 100 golfers came out to enjoy a great day of golf and helped raise over $90,000 to support The Village’s Fatherhood Engagement Services—an important program that works to help strengthen father-child bonds and helps fathers learn skills to grow their parenting relationships.

I knew I wanted to be a good father. This was the opportunity to get it right.

Meet Devon.

Devon was invited to engage with The Village and reconnect with his children after being incarcerated for eight years. Now that he’s been involved with The Village’s Fatherhood Engagement Services, he and his children are seeing the benefits, and Devon has regained his confidence.

Leadership Giving

(July 1, 2020 —June 30, 2021)

We extend our gratitude to all of our partners, donors, volunteers and others who support our work. In this year of disruption and change, it is especially meaningful that so many of our supporters have stood by our side as we responded to the challenge to maintain services—and build new ones! THANK YOU to each of you for enabling us to continue helping children, adults and families as they make real and meaningful change in their lives. Your support means more than can be measured.

Village Second Chance Shops

In the best of times, what the members of the Glastonbury, Simsbury, Suffield and West Hartford Auxiliaries do for The Village is remarkable. This year, their dedication has been truly inspiring. Despite a pandemic-driven multi-month shutdown of their Second Chance Shops, the Auxiliaries stayed engaged, maintained a safe retail environment, reopened in fall 2020 with reduced hours and managed to raise $400,000 to help support the tens of thousands of families served by The Village.

Every bit of profit from the Shops goes completely, 100% to The Village for Families & Children.

Endowment Gifts

A strong endowment is a critical component of an institution’s financial strength. Funds established in support of The Village’s endowment provide program support for the families we serve today and for future generations. They also generate steady and predictable income for daily operations. We are grateful to the donors who established these lasting gifts:

  • Ruth E. Clark Memorial Endowment Fund
  • Norbert Fried Memorial Scholarship Fund
  • Dian D. and Irving J. (Irv) Friedman Family Fund
  • Friends of the Family Endowed Fund
  • Cynthia B. Godfrey Memorial Fund
  • Betty Goumas Memorial Fund
  • Kissane Family Emergency Assistance Fund

  • Estate of Flora W. Arnoldi
  • Brian and Wendy Carberg
  • Mrs. Francine E. Christiansen
  • Mr. Colin & Mrs. Jeanmarie Cooper
  • Mrs. Janice F. Klein
  • Mr. Barry N. Lastra

Leaving a Legacy

Meet Bob.

Bob and Judy Sturgis created the Robert & Judith Sturgis Family Foundation as a charitable resource for organizations close to their hearts. A longtime Simsbury Auxiliary Member and educator, Judy took a special interest in The Village’s Early Childhood Learning Center. Judy lost her battle with pancreatic cancer in April 2021 but her gift will make a significant difference in the lives of young children and their families for years to come.

Committee of the Auxilians

The Village and the children and families we serve are fortunate to have the support of more than 400 volunteer Auxilians. Among many other things, the Auxilians run our Second Chance Shops, thrift boutiques that sell new and gently used clothing and household items. All proceeds from the Shops support The Village.

A Top Workplace...Again!

The Village has been named Top Workplace two years in a row

We are grateful for our employees’ hard work and dedication, especially during these challenging times. We’re pleased that our staff feels the love and that, for the second year in a row, The Village was named a Top Workplace. The designation, earned through an anonymous survey and awarded by an independent non-profit, validates our commitment to diversity and inclusion and encouraging different points of view. This year, staff also overwhelmingly reported feeling that The Village operates by strong values and is “going in the right direction.”

Being named a Top Workplace doesn’t happen by accident or luck. We value our staff and make sure they feel it—the culture, communication, benefits and of course our mission.

Health Care Heroes Awards

Alicia Aponte, Village Lead Nurse, Eagle House Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility and Matthew Dickison, Village Adult Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, were acknowledged with The Hartford Business Journal’s Health Care Heroes Awards this past year for being outstanding healthcare leaders.
